While all education ideally should be seamless, there are many bumps in the road. Those bumps contribute to the disconnect that students often experience as they go from one class to another and one subject to another. For example, a frequent comment might be, "This is math class, why do we have to write?" When students are able to make connections between what they are learning and what they are experiencing they see the relevance of the subject area and are much more likely to become engaged learners. It is at this point also that higher level thinking skills are utilized.
GenEI curricula were developed to teach entrepreneurship education in a seamless manner. The middle school or beginning curriculum introduces entrepreneurial concepts in a hands-on, activity based format. However, each unit and lesson reflects one or more achieved National Content Standards and Benchmarks for Entrepreneurship Education. As students are planning their businesses they are researching pricing, presenting business plans, developing their advertising campaigns and practicing customer service. If they didn't learn the skill in math or English, they learn it at this point because it is relevant to the success of their business. Because they have learned it at a higher level of thinking than just knowledge, rote, they will remember it and be able to utilize it in their math or English class.
The high school curriculum is written in the same, project-based, fashion. The Content Standards and Benchmarks reflect a higher level of understanding with more detailed concepts.
The new, advanced curriculum is available after the high school course. This course is designed with online, virtual lessons, with a face-to-face component for business implementation.
All educational disciplines have Content Standards and Benchmarks that are to be taught during a course. While they are subject specific, they all have commonalities. The GenEI curricula have been written to crosswalk into as many other curricula as possible. Written this way, it is easier for students to make those connections, and education becomes more seamless with one subject flowing into another.
Everyone benefits from this process as the student has learned the material, their belief in themselves and their belief in their ability to succeed increases, they are more likely to complete high school, and they see added value to pursuing education/training after high school.
These connections provide a seamless pathway for students as they learn entrepreneurial skills that will prepare them to compete in an ever-changing economy.
Specifically, GenEI recognizes the need to prepare youth for post secondary education. Our curricula are written to:
- Align with the National Content Standards and Benchmarks for Entrepreneurship Education and the Career and Employability Content Standards and Benchmarks;
- Crosswalk to meet one-half credit in English language Arts;
- Crosswalk to meet one-half credit in student credit recovery programs and
- Articulate up to three college credits when taught as a full semester high school course.
